Understanding Boredom in the Pursuit of Goals

It’s inevitable, if you are working towards a goal, putting in consistent effort, and repeating the steps regularly, you will hit an obstacle that even the best athletes/entrepreneurs/leaders will face – boredom. It sounds odd saying it, but it is true – going to the gym, sticking to healthy eating habits, or even sticking to your calendar can get boring. The difference between those who succeed in their goals and those who don’t, are the ones who can work through the boredom, keeping their sight on the end goal.

Breaking Down Your Big Goal into Smaller Ones

Goals such as losing weight can be a slow process where it can be difficult to see progress – coupled with changes in eating habits and doing the same workouts, the brain naturally seeks novelty and variety, making it difficult to maintain a habit. By breaking down the big goal into smaller goals, it becomes easier to see progress and stay motivated.

Adding Variety to Your Habits

To overcome boredom, try a new or different exercise regime or class, or change your environment. Mix in things you enjoy to keep it fun. Give yourself small rewards (something that will help you achieve your goal, not take you away from it).

Celebrating Your Progress

Track your progress by journaling, taking pictures, and taking measurements. Celebrating your progress along the way will keep you motivated and focused on the end goal.

Keeping Your End Goal in Mind

Focus on the bigger picture and your end goal. Remember why you started and what you hope to achieve.

Seeking Support from Others

Talk to someone such as an accountability partner, personal trainer, or coach. Having someone to bounce ideas off of and support you can make all the difference.

Embracing Boredom as a Natural Part of the Journey

It’s really important to recognise that being bored does not mean that you are doing something wrong or that the goal is not for you. It’s natural to feel very motivated at the start of anything and for that motivation to wane. Being prepared for the boredom will mean that you are less likely to give up.
